Exam stress and anxiety

How to help your child prepare for their upcoming GCSE exams.

Being a parent is a very difficult job and unfortunately it doesn’t come with an instruction manual. There are many times in my life as a parent that I would have loved some additional support and advice. However, after many hours sitting, worrying, and stressing about my child I can honestly say I have managed to break it all down into a few things.

Why do all these things really bother me?  I have realised like most parents I try to please too many people, fit too much into my life, rush around without stopping, follow all society’s rules and regulations, hold down a job and raise the most wonderful human being.  It suddenly dawned on me that actually I can rest, and the world won’t stop. I can take time to think. During this slow down, relaxation time I suddenly realised why I worry and stress so much about my child. It is because I care about my child’s future and happiness. I want them to achieve all the best possible outcomes in life. I want them to achieve a healthy and active life.  Throughout my lifetime I have developed the knowledge and skills to realise that each and every person is different. In fact, I actually read a quote recently that stated “be yourself in life as everyone else is taken “. Oscar Wilde.  This quote is so true to life and yet we seem to forget this in our everyday life.

Being a parent to a teenager preparing for their GCSE is difficult. You have lots of emotions and concerns yourself based around wanting the best for your child. Things may seem different around your home, and you don’t know if what you are doing Is working and helping. Well let me tell you, the fact that you are worrying and caring is already helping.  Children’s exam anxiety is all too common. Many children get into very extreme states of stress and panic, causing them to become exhausted, irritable, tired, and unable to concentrate. They may be showing different types of behaviours at home, shouting, withdrawing, having panic attacks, crying, overeating, changes in their sleep patterns and many more. Your child may be thinking that they are not good enough or they haven’t done enough. Everyone within their social circles is talking about GCSE exams. Teachers, parents, friends, tv, papers.  It is normal for children to feel stressed and worried at this time too, and actually some stress is good for us. Stress can help us with a sense of achievement and help to keep us motivated.

What can you do as a parent to help with exam anxieties?

If your child is experiencing exam stress and anxiety, then don’t add additional pressures on your child. Ensure your child is creating a healthy routine such as eating well, staying hydrated, and getting a good night’s sleep. Take time to listen to your child and ask them about how they are feeling. Talk to your child about the expectations and beliefs that you have. If you expect a certain amount of revision, then explain this to your child whilst allowing flexibility to your child’s needs. Explain to your child that you are working with them during this time and that you only want the best for them. After all we can All only do our best. Ensure that your child is having free time and exercise. This is particularly helpful during an Early evening time after tea but at least 2 hours before their typical bedtime.  This may help create a time when they are distracted rather than worrying. The exercise will also help your child to sleep better.  Creating positive affirmations and statements that they can tell themselves regularly will help your child to change their mindset to a more positive one.

Can hypnotherapy help with exam anxieties and stress?

If your child is suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, or exam stress, hypnotherapy can help. Hypnotherapy can be a great resource for kids who are struggling with anxiety and stress. The first step to treating anxiety and panic attacks is learning how to manage them. Hypnotherapy works by helping you take control of the situation so that you feel more in control of your thoughts and feelings. I can help by guiding your child through a process of relaxation that allows them to let go of negative thoughts about the situation at hand, as well as any feelings of worry or fear that may be hindering you from doing well on exams or other stressful tasks at school. When this happens, it can help reduce the amount of stress involved in those situations so that your child can focus on what needs to be done without worrying about how things will turn out later in life.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to remember that you are trying your best. Staying calm and being understanding regarding your child’s needs is key. Take time to focus on yourself and help your child to do the same.  Set aside time to relax and practice mindfulness. Put yourself in a positive frame of mind ready to help and support your child to   be the best that they can be. Remember that all you want is a healthy and happy child that thrives in life. Affirmations are a great way to encourage yourself and your child to make positive changes and create a better life for your family. I specialise in helping kids who are under a lot of stress, especially when it comes to exams or parenting. I know how hard it can be to get through those times.
